Victim Advocate

As a victim advocate you will work directly with victims of trafficking, assisting them in the recovery and restoration process. After receiving Victim of Sex Trafficking Advocacy (VOSTA) training you will be assigned a trafficking victim that is in the journey of recovery. As a VOSTA advocate you will be directly associated with the wrap around care providers involved in your client’s recovery. Additionally you will make personal weekly contact with your victim/client while building a long term relationship of support and advocacy.

Characteristics of quality advocates may include:

  • Compassionate and caring personality.
  • Availability of time and personal involvement.
  • Social work background experience.
  • Patience and determination that does not quit or give up easily .
  • Attention to details and followup.
  • Positive attitude to help motivate discouraged or troubled individuals.
  • Ability to interact professionally with various agencies, departments and care givers while advocating for your victim/client rights.
  • Confidentiality of priviledged information.
  • Concerned care giving with boundaries (skill set that promotes healthy independence rather than co-dependent enabelment).

Please understand that most victims of trafficking have been lied to, tricked, manipulated, abused and violated by the false promises of family, friends, and authority figures in their past. Many suffer from detachment disorders and an inability to bond or trust freely. The advocate position is one of long term care and support in an effort to assist trust building… this is not intended as a temporary volunteer role.

All individuals that assist with direct care of trafficking victims are required to undergo a background check, special needs training and continuing education.
